Tyler Hasenstein stated "I'm sure everyone is familiar with the polar vortex," he is a meteorologist at the National Weather Service Forecast Office in the Minnesota Twin Cities area.
Hasenstein refers to the super air body which normally stays locked at the North Pole and rotates endless circles around the North Pole.
But this past week, a low-pressure storm system moving through the Great Lakes region paved the way for a vortex to move south, Hasenstein told Live Science. And cold air will occur in its place for the next few days. This happens because the high-pressure system is very strong in the north and west.
Very intense cold temperatures in large areas around Minneapolis are related to certain shapes of current jet streams, said Hasenstein, who gave more cold air to this area. Even worse, high-pressure masses interact with the air at the south pole to produce strong winds that make low temperatures already dangerous even worse for people outside the room.
Some local news has decreased the temperature to minus 60 F (minus 51 C) in the North Dakota region.
